Kamikatsu Zero Waste Efforts
and Regional Revitalization

Kamikatsu made the first Zero Waste Declaration in Japan in 2003 and opened the symbol of this, the Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center, on May 30, 2020. We have been integral to this initiative, participating from its conceptualization through to its operational commencement, and actively champion its pursuits. The center's design exemplifies the zero-waste ethos, incorporating windows crafted from reclaimed components of traditional townhouses, mirroring the sustainable essence of our flagship concept store, Rise & Win Brewing Co. BBQ & General Store. The building materials further align with our commitment to regional revitalization, sourced exclusively from Kamikatsu's indigenous wood.

KAMIKATSU ZERO WASTE CENTER

The center is shaped like a question mark when viewed from above, with the horseshoe-shaped part at the top serving as a collection area for 45 types of separate waste, designed to improve ventilation and separate lines of movement between residents and visitors for privacy. The "dot" part functions as a hotel where guests can experience Kamikatsu's initiatives, such as sorting waste at the garbage station during checkout.

The facility houses Garbage Station, Kamikatsu’s intermediate waste processing facility, as well as the Kurukuru Shop reuse center, the Exchange Hall community space, and the Collaborative Laboratory co-working space. This center accommodates visitors and observers more than the town’s population in residents each year, fostering communication and collaboration through initiatives on waste.

Considering the Future of Kamikatsu

As a private company, we promote efforts to "reduce, reuse, and recycle" to achieve circular systems of production, distribution, and sales (circular economy). We believe that such public-private initiatives are key to stopping depopulation and revitalizing the economy. We proactively promote Kamikatsu's zero waste efforts by managing the Center, conducting PR for the town of Kamikatsu, and spreading awareness of these activities.
